Introduction
This
book has been arranged quite simply. We start by introducing the vowels that are
required to write Kashmiri. Those familiar with Hindi will quickly realize the
additional sounds that Kashmiri requires. We then present the consonants. Again,
there are a few consonants that are unique to Kashmiri, and which have been
added to those consonants that are commonly used in Hindi.
We urge you not to be carried
away by the fact that in English, a number of the Roman symbols that we have
used for Kashmiri, have a certain pronunciation, with which you would no doubt,
be very familiar. The pronunciation of each of the vowels and consonants is
systematically explained, with sufficient examples for you to internalize the
pronunciation of each symbol as required in Kashmiri. We are confident that
merely one reading of this book will enable you to actually start writing
Kashmiri with unbelievable fluency, if you already know the language.
We would be grateful to have
your comments/suggestions and ideas which we would happily include in our
subsequent editions, and a dictionary that we are working on. Do write to us at
