A
conversation on buying groceries from a traditional grocer. The names of
commonly used Kashmiri spices are introduced.
|
Grocer:
What would you like, sir?
Ashok: I
have a list of things.
Grocer:
Tell me the items. I shall note them down.
Ashok: One
kilo of sugar, half a kilo of tea, three kilos of rice, and one kilo of
da:l.
Grocer:
Which type of da:l?
Ashok: Beans.
Grocer:
Would you like anything else?
Ashok: Yes,
spices.
Grocer:
What kind of spices?
Ashok: Half
a kilo each of t.mp3eric, ginger, fennel seed, and red pepper.
Grocer:
Would you perhaps want some cardamom, etc.?
Ashok: Yes,
one rupee's worth of cardamom and one rupee's worth of cinnamon. Oh yes,
also one kilo of salt.
Grocer:
Anything else?
Ashok: No,
that is all. How long will it take?
Grocer:
Just ten or fifteen minutes.
Ashok: How
much is it?
Grocer:
The total is thirty rupees and fifty paise.
Ashok: Here
is your money.
Grocer:
Thank you.
