A CONVERSATION WITH A BOATMAN

conversation on hiring a shikara, a particular type of boat used for
sightseeing. The shikaras are specially decorated and have cushions with
springs. There are several types of shikaras used for various purposes. This
conversation pertains to a sightseeing trip on Dal Lake.
A prolonged (and enjoyable)

note the boatman's response: 
Whatever you like, sir. This
is a frequent response to inquiries about prices, rates, etc. On the whole,
prices are negotiable, and the response does not necessarily mean that the buyer
has a choice. All this indicates is that the seller is open to bargaining.

Boatman: Yes, sir, what can I do for you?
Ashok: Will you go to Nishat (Garden)?
Boatman: Yes, come on down (here).
Ashok: How long will it take?
Boatman: One hour.
Ashok: What is the rate from here?
Boatman: Whatever you like, sir.
Ashok: No, (tell me) what is the rate?
Boatman: Eight rupees.
Ashok: No, six rupees is a fair price.
Boatman: All right, come on down.
Ashok: All right, let's go.
